Street Smart

StreetSmart raises thousands for homeless charities in the Uk every year during November and December. In the 2008 campaign they raised the incredible sum of £435,000.

StreetSmart operates as an umbrella charity providing funding to 95 homelessness charities across 18 cities. Unlike other charities in the same bracket, the money raised by individual restaurants is reinvested directly into their respective city’s various homelessness charities. Diners can therefore be assured that the money they donate will have a direct benefit to charities in their home city, helping to shelter and feed the homeless during the cold winter months.

The chosen charities receive between £500 and £15,000, depending on the project to be funded. Once the winter emergency needs have been met, StreetSmart use any remaining funds to help projects that support people back to employment and sustainable independent living. Another unique aspect of the way in which StreetSmart operates is that unlike any other competitor charity, every single penny of the money raised goes directly towards helping the homeless, as all administration costs are covered by StreetSmart’s generous sponsor, Deutsche Bank.

At the end of your meal, a voluntary charge of £1 per table is added to the bill after service and VAT. Dinner for four would amount to each person contributing 25p. You of course, can choose not to participate, simply by telling the staff who can easily remove it from the bill.

Some facts about oysters

No 19th-century banquet would have been complete without a dozen or more oysters for each guest. The multimillionaire railroad tycoon "Diamond Jim" Brady (James Buchanan Brady, 1856-1917) began dinner each evening with two or three dozen on the half shell while Casanova, the 18th century lover used to enjoy 50 oysters for breakfast, has been vindicated by a study that proves they really are aphrodisiacs. Today's bon vivants continue to enjoy oysters, perhaps not as many or as often but the health benefits continue to be proven.

When should you have oysters?

  • For brunch (think of Eggs Benedict with oysters instead of the ham).
  • As a first course with lunch or dinner.
  • With cocktails - superb combined with a foaming tankard of Black Velvet.
  • As a low-calorie, high-protein snack
  • For parties and celebration dinners.

Why should you have oysters?

Oysters are not only delicious, but they're also one of the most nutritionally well-balanced foods. They're high in protein, low in fat and loaded with essential minerals.

  • Ounce for ounce, oysters have fewer calories and about the same level of cholesterol as white-fleshed fish; and are much lower in fat, cholesterol and calories when compared to poultry.
  • The National Heart and Lung Institute suggests oysters as an ideal food for inclusion in low-cholesterol diets.
  • Oysters are an excellent source of vitamins A, B1 (thiamin) B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), C (ascorbic acid) and D (calciferol). Four or five medium-size oysters supply the recommended daily allowance of calcium, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc.
  • One entire cup of oyster meat (that's as much as Diamond Jim Brady would consume) is just 160 calories. Figure 10 calories per medium oyster, or 20 calories per ounce of oyster meat.

Whether you enjoy them raw or cooked, you can enjoy them in abundance.
